Mexborough & Swinton Times – Saturday 01 November 1941

In Balloon Barrage.

One of the first women in the country to be posted to the balloon barrage is Aircraftwoman Nancy Hewer youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Hewer, 67, Rowms Lane, Swinton. A/C. Hewer, who thinks the life is grand, recently passed first class several tests connected with balloon barrage work.

She was the first Swinton girl to join the W.A.A.F.. and before joining up took the leading part in two pantomimes organised by St. Michael’s Church, of which she was a member.

Since joining up in May last year she has taken part in several camp concerts, and broadcast last November.
