Six for 21 Carr, In Council too Strong for Darfield

Swinton 106 for 3  Darfield 105

Bowler Athel Carr (picture), playing his first Yorkshire Council game, took six wickets for 21 runs and played the leading role in Swinton’s seven wickets victory over Darfield at Swinton on Saturday. The game started 38 mins late after a late arrival by the Darfield team, who had found difficulty getting transport.

Opening Darfield pair, J. Routledge and A. Green, started with quick scoring shots as if to make up for lost time, until Carr was brought on to bowl.  He took the first four wickets, Routledge (20), Green (20), D. Batty (0), and K. Kitchen (1), and at that time his analysis was four wickets for two runs in four overs.

Kay played a good innings of 18 before being bowled by J. Kerry, and W. Townsend was the only other batsman to reach double figures – with eleven.  R. Butler took the last 2 wickets for four runs, and Kerry finished with 2 for 12, but Carr made a great bid for a regular place in the first team after only two second team games. His final analysis read 13 overs, 5 maidens, 21 runs 6 wickets. Darfield were out by tea for 105.

R. Cutts (32) and W. Cummins (29), Swinton opening pair, looked like giving the home team a ten wickets victory. They fully mastered the bowling, and played scoring shots all the time. M. Hussey nearly caught Cutts in the slips, but there was never any real danger for them until H. Allen (wicket-keeper) made two fine catches, one of K. Kitchen to dismiss Cutts and the other off W. Townsend to take Cummins. B. Bailey scored 17 not out and B. Walsh ten before hitting his wicket.

The side went on to victory with seven wickets in hand. K. Colton scoring 10 not out. W. Townsend (1 for 33), K. Kitchen (1 for 12) and J. Ennis (1 for 15) took the Swinton wickets.
