Swinton Raced to Victory With 101 in 80 Minutes

Rossington 98  Swinton 101 for 3

Before their best “gate” of the season and in perfect cricket weather, Swinton followed up last week’s victory over Frickley with a brilliant seven wicket success over Rossington at Swinton on Saturday – Rossington’s first defeat this season.

Bowlers R Butler and W Ward again shared the wickets, the former taking five for 54 and Ward 5 for 43.

Rossington’s last-wicket pair, W. Armstrong (7) and F. Syms (12 not out), figured in the highest stand of the innings, taking the score from 79 to 98, when the innings closed after 110  minutes.

Swinton openers. Ray Cutts (picture) and D. W. Cummins. maintained over a run a minute pace before Cummins was out for 14 with the total at 19. However, T. Walker (12) helped Cutts to raise the half-century in 45 minutes before he fell to a catch off Harkin.

Rossington captain, Charlie Pegg, frequently changed his bowlers, giving six re members of his side a chance of securing Swinton wickets. But Cutts, batting confidently, was joined by Terence Stables, and they carried the total to 90, Stables leaving after making a valuable 13. Joined by Kerry, Cutts made the winning hit with a flashing four to the off and also carried his own personal score to 52 not out. Thirty-two of his runs were scored through boundary strokes.

The Swinton total of 101 for 3 was scored in 80 minutes. D. Harkin, with 2 for 18, was the most successful Rossington bowler.
